Can Hypnotherapy Help People Quit Smoking?

The simple answer is “YES!!”… so please read on if you are a smoker committed to quitting smoking.

You may be thinking how can hypnotherapy help you quit smoking. If you are then please read What Is Hypnotherapy? Broadly this is how by working with me and applying hypnotherapy, you can quit smoking because smoking is not an addiction but rather a habit. Hypnotherapy works by providing you with suggestions whilst your are in hypnosis that help you to break your smoking habit and replace it with a different more positive habit.

Before we get into any more detail regarding the actual hypnotherapy “process”, here are some facts regarding smoking that support your desire to quit smoking:

  • Nearly 50% of all smokers die prematurely due to smoking-related diseases
  • The life expectancy of a smoker is about 10 years less than that of a non-smoker
  • In the UK it is estimated only half of long-term smokers live past the age of 70

There are many other similar sobering facts that highlight why smoking isn’t the greatest of habits to have. However, you do need to be highly motivated to quit smoking as it is you who ultimately decides to quit smoking; if you are not currently highly motivated then you can :

  • Or we can work to increase your motivation; we can then start the smoking cessation process

So how does the smoking cessation hypnotherapy ‘process’ work? These are the main stages:

Session One – Pre-Therapy

Session One is designed to enable me to obtain as much information about you and your smoking habit so I can design the most effective therapy session for you. I will also set you up and get you prepared for hypnotherapy in Session Two. I will do this by:

  • Asking various questions about you and your smoking habit and why you want to quit smoking
  • Educating you on how we will work together so that you successfully quit smoking
  • Giving you some practical things to do before the hypnotherapy session

Session Two – Hypnotherapy

I will explain how the session will work and the various hypnotherapy techniques I will be using. I will then place you into hypnosis and start the therapy.

The desire/want/need to smoke should be gone at the end of the second session; the key is maintaining this “quit-feeling” in the medium-longer term. To support you with this, I will also:

  • Give you techniques you can use yourself after the session, for example, self-hypnosis
  • Agree any post-session actions that will re-enforce the fact you have stopped smoking
